The new 1963 Corvette Sting Ray was a vastly improved car. The Stingray Racer-inspired body was just stunning and the new 4-wheel independent suspension was a big step forward. The enhanced suspension that provided more control and a lower center of gravity, should have put the new Sting Ray solidly into the winner’s circle. The new racer kit option, the Z06, was the hot setup for Corvette racers. The only problem was that there was a new kid on the block called the Shelby Cobra. Actually, the Corvette and the Cobra should never have been in the same class, as the Cobra was 1,000-pounds lighter than even a stripped down racing Corvette. So, until the big-blocks showed up in ‘65, Corvettes did a lot of chasing of Shelby’s little Cobras. But then in ‘66 Roger Penske showed us the future with his pre-production L-88 ‘66 Corvette Coupe. Good news for Corvette fans... Bad news for Cobra lovers.
